There is something deeply human in the eyes of a chimpanzee.
When I created The Observer, I wanted to capture that quiet moment of awareness — the feeling that the animal is not simply being watched, but is also watching us in return.
The soft grey mist surrounding the chimp was used deliberately to create atmosphere and isolation, allowing the viewer’s attention to settle naturally on the expression and eyes. The diagonal branch adds movement through the composition, but also creates a sense of concealment, as though the observer is emerging gently from the shadows to study the world around him.
Painted in acrylic and oils on a 16 x 20 inch canvas, this piece became as much about emotion as it was about wildlife. I’ve always been drawn to animals that show intelligence and character in their expression, and with this painting I wanted to portray calm curiosity, innocence, and quiet reflection rather than dominance or aggression.
For me, The Observer represents the stillness that exists between moments — a reminder that strength does not always need to be loud, and that sometimes the most powerful presence is simply the one that notices everything.
