“The Thinker” was created as a quiet study of reflection, intelligence, and presence. I wanted this piece to feel calm and powerful at the same time — not aggressive, but deeply contemplative. The pose, with the gorilla resting its chin in its hand, immediately reminded me of the timeless human gesture of thought, and I was drawn to exploring that emotional connection through wildlife art.
Painted on a 16 x 20 inch canvas using a combination of acrylic and oil paints, the process focused heavily on controlled lighting, tonal depth, and atmosphere. The dark smoky grey background was intentionally kept soft and understated to allow the viewer’s attention to settle naturally on the eyes, facial structure, and hand placement. Rather than overworking every detail, I concentrated on creating strong form and mood through layered shadows and selective highlights.
For me, this piece is less about painting an animal and more about capturing a moment of silent thought — something familiar, human, and emotionally recognisable within the strength of the gorilla itself.
